TRPA needs your help; besides Hidalgo Falls yearly cost of property taxes, electricity bills, and maintenance costs, TRPA has created a fund to be used to purchase additional acres surrounding Hidalgo Falls when they become available. Their long-term goal is to protect the property near the falls from residential or commercial development and to create a park to pass on to future generations of river enthusiasts where they can come to enjoy a unique natural resource in this part of the state.
I spend much of my free time photographing the falls; it is my sanctuary from everyday life. The falls is a beautiful section of the Brazos River, with some interesting history, including mastodon bones found just downstream, it was used as a river crossing by Stephen F. Austin and the "original 300" Anglo settlers in Texas. Six miles downstream is Washington-on-the-Brazos, where Texas declared its independence from Mexico.
